Judging the Pretoria Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Club 2008 Open show – 9th February 2008

Judge: Joe Schiller

First off I would like to congratulate the Chairman and his committee a big “WELL DONE”, the show was run to perfection with the ring well laid out and large enough and beautifully adorned. I really appreciated the clubs gift,

I would also like to extend my thanks to all the exhibitors who came out on the day and supported the club. To each and every one of you, well done, as just by owning show dogs you are already winners and I saw good sportsmanship and positive behavior,

I have where possible tried to comment positively and believe that my judging style rewards virtue before penalizing faults and my report should be taken in this light.

In all I found all male dogs to be entire with two fully descended testicles and there were no reasons to penalize or disqualify any exhibit due to health or other reasons.

DOGS:

Baby Puppy (1)

1st  :      Silvana Bismarck - Mrs  Mateus

An upstanding red puppy with a good head, broad and powerful, straight front and well let down hocks, I would like more muscling in the hindquarters but the pup has much to develop still. On the move he was parallel in front and behind and had adequate drive.

Minor Puppy (3)

1st  :      Larumo Shark Attack - Mr L & Mrs A Coetsee & Smith

A compact heavyweight black puppy that I really liked, broad chest and deep brisket, good bone with well sprung ribs and a beautiful straight front. Compact and close coupled with a good bend of stifle good top-line and powerful head with a broad muzzle and nice dark eye. Moved well both coming and going with great drive.

2nd :      Raminartus Pumba - Ms S van Niekerk

A black pup with a good bend of stifle, not as much bone as the winner, also has a powerful head with nice small rose ears. On the move was a little close behind but parallel in front with adequate drive.

3rd  :              Sylon Basil - Mr L Ten Napel

Puppy (6)

1st  :      Sylon Batista - Mrs L van Niekerk

An upstanding black, broad powerful head with great expression and well shaped rose ears, muzzle short and deep with a correct mouth. Body well muscled and close coupled with good spring of rib, tail well set on. His movement gave him the win parallel coming and going with good drive.

2nd :      Larumo Kalahari Magua  - Mr M Heroldt

A heavyweight black puppy, also had a good head with great expression, wide powerful muzzle. The dog also has a broad chest and deep brisket with a straight front and good bone. Did not move well behind at all and lacked drive which let him down for the win.

3rd  :              Lewan Black Thunder

Handler left the ring to soon could not write report.

4th :           Larumo Black Diamond of Kelev - Mr P Grek

Junior (4)

1st  :      Sylon Conan of Rivendale - Mrs J Smith

A red dog with a good head, nice small rose ears and a broad        powerful muzzle. A well muscled body that was close coupled and had a level      top-line. His overall better muscling and condition gave him the edge in the class, moved very well coming and going with good drive.

2nd :      Sylon Bulla - Mrs L van Niekerk

Another red dog, similar in type to the winner, also with a good head, well laid shoulders and level top-line, I would have liked to see a deeper chest and more bone.

3rd  :              Kelev Prince Imperial - Mr P Grek

4th :       Saphire Zeus of Melstaf - Mr  R Johnston

Graduate(2)

1st  :      Agoe Captian Good - Mr W van Heerden

A black dog lovely broad chest with well sprung ribs, level top-line and correct tail set, also has heavy round bone, overall denoting power. A broad powerful head, hind quarters were well muscled and stifles well bent.

2nd :      Frelonius One of a Kind - Mrs F Vermeulen

A dark brindle and white who had a lovely head, short, deep and strong, small rose ears, well muscled neck and body

Open: (6)

1st  :      Frelonius Leading Man - Mrs F Vermeulen

A brindle and white with a cracker head, broad and deep with a distinct stop, nice round eyes and small rose ears. Well muscled and laid back shoulders with plenty of bone and substance, well sprung ribs with a good straight front. A level top-line and correct tail set presented a picture of quality. On the move this dog was a pleasure to behold, wide and parallel in both directions with tremendous drive. This was a difficult class with a number of good animals; I chose this exhibit because of his overall better head, type and power.

2nd :      CH Sylon Saphooka Bullet of Sivhana - Mr L Ten Napel

A red dog also showing a lot of quality with a broad deep chest,    well muscled and laid shoulders and a straight front. Also, he moved very well.

A brindle and white packed with type and power, a broad, deep chest, straight front with good bone, a well muscled neck and shoulders that were well laid back. Head, wide deep and strong with a definite stop, correct mouth, nice rose ears and round eyes. On the move he was excellent, parallel in both directions and from the side with plenty of drive. Hindquarters well muscled and stifles well bent, hocks well let down. This was another difficult class to judge due to the quality of animals present but I had to make a choice which went to this exhibit due to his better movement and overall power and condition.

A lovely red and white puppy with a powerful broad head, slightly long in the back at this stage but nevertheless has a good lay-back of shoulder, adequate bone with a level top-line and correct tail set. A good turn of stifle and well let down hocks. Also moved adequately in all directions.

A black brindle heavyweight puppy bitch with good substance and bone, broad and deep chest with a level top-line, well muscled and laid back shoulders. Hind quarters were strong with plenty of muscle, a good turn of stifle and well let down hocks. She has a strong head, broad and deep with a short muzzle and distinct stop. Good quality and type, ears were also small and rose shaped. I preferred her in this class for her overall better substance and power. On the move she was square coming and going and had plenty of drive.

A black bitch with a good head, broad and powerful, eyes and ears well made with a correct mouth, muzzle could have been shorter. She moved very well both directions square with plenty of drive. I would like to see more spring of rib and more turn on the stifles. Top-line level and correct tail-set.

Veteran: (1)

1st  :      Audentia Lady Dominique of Riefra - Prof  E van Heerden

A red bitch looking remarkably good for her age, still lively and active, was carrying a little bit of extra weight but nevertheless enjoying the show, well muscled with a good lay back of shoulder and spring of rib, top-line and tail-set correct.

Overall I preferred her type to the rest.

A black bitch which had an adequate head with a broad muzzle. Her body was well muscled and powerful with a deep brisket, good spring of rib, level top-line and correct tail-set. She was a good mover but did not have the head and expression nor type of the winner.
